Jet Li is back and unleashing Badges of Fury

Badges of Fury

For years Jet Li has been unleashing his whirlwind of martial arts fury on audiences but with the exception of the Expendables series he has been mostly doing the epic period type films. Now he is stepping out of the period action and into the modern buddy cop genre with Badges of Fury. He has already established himself as a master of the aforementioned genre, but does this return bring the same punch fans are used too?

Badges of Fury follow two trouble making cops who are assigned to a case of eerie murders erupting across Hong Kong. Upon reaching a dead end after discovering all the victims were former boyfriends of an aspiring starlet, the detectives must play a deadly game to solve the case. While it’s great to have Jet Li back in the cop genre, this particular film isn’t what you might hope for. It’s not a bad film by any means, but it is far from a great one. There are some great fight scenes and in reality that’s what most people that watch this film are wanting anyway, but there is also a lot of silliness. At first this film plays like a typical buddy cop feature, but quickly starts getting way too silly. They created a story that is a bit dark, but so many goofy spins that it felt more like something from Stephen Chow than the sort of Jet Li film you may be used too. While Li is featured prominently here, this isn’t really his film. He is more of the co-star here with the rest of the cast leading the charge and giving him enough to work with without having to step too far into the cheese. The biggest issue here isn’t that they went into the cheesy area, but that it came as more of a surprise. If you know this going in then you will most likely still have a good time with the film.

Li is one of the few in the film that is played pretty straight with only a few silly moments and comes as no surprise he showcases some of the best fights in the film. This may not be the Jet Li movie fans were hoping for, but it still brings the action and the fun, just prepare yourself for the more comedic tone and you are sure to have a great time.
