Jazz Jackrabbit is a 2d side scrolling action game released for DOS on July 30th, 1994. The game was developed and published by Epic MegaGames. The story is a parody of Aesop’s “The Tortoise and the Hare”, where the hare and the tortoise have taken their rivalry to the next level, except the tortoise (Devan Shell) plays the role of the antagonist and the hare (Jazz Jackrabbit) is the protagonist. Is this game worth looking into, or is it a bad parody of a timeless tale?

Graphics-The graphics are bright and colorful, and the animations are fluid and give a cartoony feel. The only gripe is that some levels have a gradient background, which looks really weak. The 3d levels are also colorful, and the animation is smooth when Jazz runs.

Sound-The soundtrack is the highlight of the game. Each level has its own soundtrack, and fits into each level really well. The upbeat and energetic rhythm gets the player pumped up for the next level.

Gameplay-The gameplay is the same as most 2d side scrolling games, where you get from point A to point B. Some levels (especially in later episodes) have multiple paths, so progress isn’t entirely linear. Most levels also have hidden passages that lead to secrets. The 3d bonus levels are also non-linear, but unlike the 2d side scrolling levels, it is easier to get lost. The objective is to collect the required number of crystals before time runs out, or you get ejected from the level.

Concept-The idea of putting Aesop’s classic tale with a futuristic twist was a weird, but workable idea. Of course, the hares must’ve done something to upset the tortoises to the point where war was declared, and three thousand years later, the two factions are still at it.

Overall-While the challenge may not be as high (this game was made for younger audiences), the concentration was more on fun than challenge, and Jazz Jackrabbit delivers.

Score: 4/5
