On Monday September 9, 2013 Alternative Metal rockers Jane's Addiction rocked the Grand Theatre inside the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino. Also on the bill were rockers Walking Papers and the psychedelic duo Strat and Mouse.
Attendance for the show was pretty good for a Monday night. Around 800 fans showed up to listen to some great rock music.
Jane's Addiction is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985. The band's original line-up featured Perry Farrell (vocals), Dave Navarro (guitar), Eric Avery (bass) and Stephen Perkins (drums). After breaking up in 1991, Jane's Addiction briefly reunited in 1997 and again in 2001, both times with Avery declining to participate. In 2008, the band's "classic" line-up, featuring Avery, reunited and embarked on a world tour. Avery subsequently left the band in early 2010 as the group began work on new material.
The band was one of the first to emerge from the early 1990's alternative rock movement to gain mainstream media attention and commercial success in the United States. Their initial farewell tour launched the first Lollapalooza festival, an alternative rock showcase. As a result, Jane's Addiction became icons of what Farrell dubbed the "Alternative Nation." The band was ranked 35th on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list.
Current members include, Perry Farrell – (lead vocals), Dave Navarro – (lead & rhythm guitars, acoustic guitar, piano), Stephen Perkins – (drums, percussion) and Chris Chaney – (bass).
The set lasted nearly 90 minutes and went something like this, (from memory, I hope I got it right)
"Underground", "Mountain Song", "Just Because", "Been Caught Stealing", "Another Soulmate", "Three Days", "Ocean Size", "Stop", "Ted, Just Admit It" and one encore song, "Jane Says".
This was this examiners first time seeing the band live. I was very impressed with their stage presence and the way they treated the fans. During the set, lead vocalist Farrell told the crowd, "F*ck Vegas, Reno's the place to be" which in turn made the place go crazy. What impressed me the most was that the fans sang along to every song, it sounded awesome and added something to the show this examiner has not heard in a while. During the encore song "Jane Said", people were actually dancing all over the venue. It was quite a sight to behold for sure.
Opening for Jane's Addiction were rockers Walking Papers.
Walking Papers is an American rock band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 2012. Formed by Jeff Angell (vocals, guitar) of The Missionary Position and Barrett Martin (drums, percussion) formerly of the Screaming Trees, they would add former Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan, and The Missionary Position's Benjamin Anderson (keyboards) to the lineup following their contributions to the debut album.
Their self-titled debut album, produced by Angell and Martin and also mixed by Jack Endino, was released on October 2, 2012 and featured contributions by Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.
Their set lasted over 45 minutes and went like this,
"The Whole World's Watching", "Red Envelopes", "Your Secret's Safe With Me", "Capital T", "The Butcher", "Two Tickets and a Room" and "Climber".
For being a relatively new band, these guys really tore it up. The fans rocked out to every song, a great opener for Jane's Addiction. After their set, I heard nothing but positive things about the band. Best of all it was good seeing Duff McKagan play again, the last time I saw him was when he played in "Velvet Revolver" when they played the Reno Events Center several years ago.
Starting the night off was Strat and Mouse from San Diego.
All in all this was a great rock concert. Be sure to catch these bands the next time they come back this way, you won't be disappointed.
A great time was had by all.
The Grand Sierra Resort & Casino (GSR) is one of Reno's best venues to see a concert, It's claimed to be the biggest indoor stage in the world, there's room for anything there. Lot's of big names have played there and more will certainly follow. To see who's coming next, (click here).
