‘The Hidden’ is the 1987 film directed by Jack Sholder. Screenwriter was Bob Hunt aka Jim Kouf.
Special Agent Lloyd Gallagher (Kyle MacLachlan) has been hunting the man who killed his wife, daughter and partner. The criminal mastermind first took on the identity of Jack DeVries (Chris Mulkey) then Jonathan P. Miller (William Boyett). The chase has been on for nine years now from one galaxy to the Milky Way.
Agent Gallagher is really Alhague, an alien cop. The unnamed parasite he’s after enters a host’s body then takes over their mind. The only way to elude capture is to frequently jump hosts. The process doesn’t give access it to the host’s memories. The alien is serial killer who murders for fun. He can only be killed after he’s left their body. So Gallagher inflicts significant damage to make it leave.
Acute radical personality and behavioral changes without history of trauma and drug use signal a person has been taken. Gallagher knows if an otherwise ordinary citizen suddenly goes on a violent crime spree and steals an expensive sports car that person is his target.
It hijacks Brenda Lee Van Buren (Claudia Christian), Lt. John Masterson’s (Clarence Felder) dog Roy, Masterson himself, Det. Cliff Willis (Ed O'Ross) then finally Senator Holt (John McCann) who is in town for his Presidential campaign.
Sgt. Thomas Beck (Michael Nouri) is the lead detective on the DeVries case. When DeVries robs a bank, kills several people, sustains multiple gunshot wounds and laughs after surviving a high speed collision, Beck wonders what drugs is he on. When Miller starts exhibiting the same behavior, he suspects something is in the water. When others catch it, he knows there’s another explanation.
Gallagher states DeVries and Miller were partners and Ms. Van Buren was part of their gang. When Gallagher continues to withhold information, Beck has him arrested. Gallagher tells the truth but Beck doesn’t believe. He does when the thing tries to kill Gallagher while he’s in lockup.
The good: Did The Hidden cement your being a lifelong fan of Kyle MacLachlan? Did Chris Mulkey remind anyone of Christopher Lambert in Highlander? The awesome Jack Devries segment sets up the premise for the entire movie. Action packed heartfelt drama and LOL funny.
Watch out! Brenda the stripper is having a bad day. No-one will forget Claudia Christian’s dress. The sequence where Gallagher has dinner with Beck’s family then stays overnight was heartbreaking.
Even before you learned Gallagher was an alien you felt sorry for him. Something was haunting him. Then the audience found out about the deaths of his loved ones. He comes off as being suicidal.
The bad: Wouldn’t change a thing.
The ugly: You loved that Alhague got a happy ending. But felt deeply conflicted since it came at Beck’s expense.
