Friday night the Bottleneck got crunk quite early, when Orion began opening the venue with electronic mixes and beats. The bars downtown were a little quiet this Friday, with a lot of party people still hung over or broke from Cinco de Mayo shenanigans. But a loyal crowd of fans and friends of local musicians and the most hardcore party people in Lawrence raged it at the Bottleneck to the tunes of some expert artists.
Electric Theory followed Orion, bringing a wave of friends and fans of the band up to the dance floor for their funky set. Trevor Stout has brought a lot of talented musicians to play with him, but his latest lineup seemed better than ever. Matt Hill - of the Floozies - plays drums with vigour and sharp, practiced skill, dropping hot dancing beats and driving rhythms for every jam. Adam Pingleton - of Orion - mixed cool electronic melodies, chords and beats on his synthesizer. Trevor layers loops of various instrumentals he plays himself, live. His combinations build into superb, dance-able jams. The improvisational heart of Electric Theory flourishes with the combination of good electronica and energetic drums. To complete the epic rager, Jeremy Anderson - of Mouth - joined the trio with his electric guitar skills. The slick, intricate guitar hooks and riffs added another dimension to the dynamic jams. Throughout their set Electric Theory played with passion and positive vibes, for a small, but loving crowd of fans. All three groups that played deserved a bigger crowd, but they still gave it their all from start to finish.
J Wail's latest collaborations with Chuck Morris of Lotus are very impressive pieces of electronic funk. J Wail works with the powers of guitar, bass, electronic synth and live drums to form fresh, organic electronica for the soul. The funky melodies and beats, backed up by intricate electronics and Chuck's wild drumming create a feast of music for the ears. The crowd was less than energetic by this hour in the night, but the headliners played a hardcore set for the remaining listeners.
If you missed J Wail's performance last night, and if you are in KC tonight, catch them at the Crosstown Station tonight!
