Thao & The Get Down Stay Down is a folk rock group based in California composed of Thao Nguyen and Adam Thompson. The duo have released a few albums before, when the band was a band of more than two, but now they're back with a brand new album entitled "We the Common". As a little taste, the title track is iTunes' single of the week.
If "We the Common (For Valerie Bolden)" is any sign, Nguyen and Thompson have quite the album on their hands. The song is an interesting mix of folk and rock—hence the genre, of course: folk rock. But what's interesting in their way of doing it is that there are parts that sound particularly folk and parts that sound particularly rock. Thao will be strumming along and singing a little ditty before it really kicks in and changes course. Sometimes it flirts between both of them, but a lot of the time it's one or the other...though the light guitar plucking never leaves the background, keeping it feeling down to earth.
It has catchy chanting, sudden (but not uninspired or pointless) genre and pace changes, a good singer and a fun instrumental. The song isn't perfect, but this is a track that I would pay for. Hopefully the rest of the album is just as well-crafted, because it's going to be released February 5. Head over to iTunes and get the song, then consider picking up the album a week from now.
So what did you think? Made your week? Pretty meh? Either way, it's nice to share. Same goes for this article if you enjoyed it!
