Too often the adventure of time travel is riddled with endless dangers of corrupting the time stream with cataclysmic time paradoxes. Where stepping on a bug in the Cretaceous period could cause irreparable harm to the evolution of mankind. Time travel should be something where the benefits far outweigh the consequences. That is where Mike Wellman and Rafael Navarro come in with their comic book “Guns A’Blazin’!”
The official launch party for “Guns A’Blazin’!” published by Atomic Basement Entertainment is this Wednesday (August 21) at The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach. Wellman (writer), Navarro (artist), and Richard Starkings (editor) will be on hand to celebrate the launch of the book that follows cowboy time-travelers Eduardo and Kody as they prove there is no harm to dabbling in a lot of time travel.
“Guns A’Blazin’!” Book One: Runnin’ with the Devil does not avoid the consequences of time travel; in fact it clearly says that the result is “total chaos!”The comic is an adventure where cowboys find themselves fighting slobbering Viking demons pursuing our heroes at the behest of Domina, a woman from the future, who has been scorned by the scoundrel that is Eduardo.
Manipulating the time stream is the easy part for Eduardo, where they end up is not. Kody and Eduardo drop through the sky narrowly avoiding the jaws of a tyrannosaurus. A chance encounter with the cave people of the time opens the world up to the kick-starting of evolution and the next great adventure for the renegade cowboys.
Wellman and Navarro’s levity with the subject matter gives the book its appeal. Eduardo is that roguish champion we all root for. He has the charm of an anti-hero we all aspire to be. Kody is the wide-eyed time travelling novice we actually are. His youthful optimism and mean streak help explore the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago. He’s not too concerned with the consequences just having a good time.
The striking art is an idealized view of the old west and the age of dinosaurs but it does it with an animated style that evokes the good nature of the story. Navarro’s artwork gives the book a distinct energetic feel. His pacing of the story creates a smooth flow as it moves across the page.
The back matter of the issue contains a history of nachos by Wellman. In the course of his historical narrative he unveils time twisting facts that shed light on the story you just read.
“Guns A’Blazin’!” could possibly be revolutionizing the time travel genre and is certainly having a good time with it. The duo of Eduardo and Kody are wild rogues with enough charm to pull you into their misadventures that seem to take them wherever the wind blows them. The mechanisms for the story will allow Wellman and Navarro to take the story in all sorts of genres providing endless possibilities for the cowboy stars of the book.
The “Guns A’Blazin’!” Gunpowder Party takes place this Wednesday, August 21, at the Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach from 5 to 7. Writer Mike Wellman, artist Rafael Navarro and editor/designer Richard Starkings will be on hand to sign copies of the Limited Gunpowder Edition of “Guns A'Blazin'!” #1.
