The mock tabloid/faux online news site makes an oft-uproarious transition to film in a series of interconnected skits that recalls vintage SNL and SCTV satirical news shows, along with a dash of The Groove Tube and Kentucky Fried Movie. The loose framework sees a corporate take-over of TV's Onion News up the trash level of the network's coverage, much to the mounting chagrin of traditional, white-haired anchor Lou Archer (Len Cariou).
Highlights include music videos featuring tweener slut goddess Melissa Cherry (Sarah McElligott) who, in accompanying interviews, denies any sexual content in hilariously rendered Britney/Miley-styled tunes like "Shoot Your Love" and "Take Me From Behind"; the "Bud Schwartz Celebrity Roast" DVD spots, featuring geriatric Z-list has-beens behaving very badly; promos for a new Steven Seagal bashfest called Cock Puncher, with the jowly one himself performing a genuinely funny cameo; and Films in Focus segments that regularly interrupt the movie-in-progress with largely negative critiques of same.
Naturally, in a project this scattershot, not every bit works, but writers Todd Hanson and Robert D. Siegel hit an admirably high percentage.
DVD extras include deleted scenes and outtakes (including more with fan fave Melissa Cherry).
