'Iron Man' is great fun

Iron Man

The first weekend in May is always a big one in the world of movie releases. This year, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” will open in theatres, and it is expected to be a blockbuster. This will be one of several comic book films of the summer of 2014. In 2008, the original “Iron Man” became the first summer blockbuster of that year. Like the “Spider-Man” films, the “Iron Man” films are based on Marvel comic books.

In “Iron Man,” Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) has the life of male fantasies. He is a one of the most successful weapons manufacturers in the world. Beautiful women vie to be in his company, and he does nothing to discourage them. He has every possible modern day technological tool or toy. His life’s trajectory changes while he is giving a weapons demonstration in Afghanistan. He is captured and forced to build a missile. With the help of Yensen (played by Shaun Toub), Tony builds a suit with a lot of weapons that he uses to escape. He returns to America, and with the assistance of his long-suffering secretary, Pepper (played by Gwyneth Paltrow), and his loyal friend, Rhodes (played by Terrence Howard), Tony develops a more advanced suit and becomes Iron Man.

This film has a great cast. Robert Downey Jr. is amazing as the highly intelligent Tony. He is brash at first, but after being captured in Afghanistan, he wants to become a better person. Another strong performance is by Jeff Bridges, who plays the nefarious villain of the movie. He is a colleague of Tony’s who wants to be in the spotlight and is jealous of Tony.

The special effects and action scenes are very impressive. One of the best scenes is when Tony uses his suit in Afghanistan. It is very exciting as we see his captors try to take him down.

“Iron Man” ranks among the best superhero films of the last 10 years.
