iPod Nano second generation

Back in 2000, people owned big and ungainly or mini and useless digital music players (also known as MP3 players). People often used PDA's or miniature MP3 players to listen to their music on the go. Apple Inc. saw an enormous opportunity to make something better and has capitalized on that for over a decade.

In October 2001, Apple released the very first MP3 player called the 'iPod.' The product was so well embraced by consumers across the county that Apple continued to update and upgrade the iPod over the next decade, releasing more versions (also known as 'generations') of their iPod to the public. They released their first version or generation iPod (known as 1G) with the memory capacity of 5 gigabytes (5GB) and 10 gigabytes (10GB). By no means was this product considered cheap, just the 5 gigabyte alone cost $399.

So, was this worth a customer's money? You bet. The reason for most of the iPod's success was its unique and stylish look, memory, and user friendly interface. Ipods held more music than the typical MP3 player of the time, while still providing the convenience of portability and ease of use. After the overwhelming success of the first iPod, Apple released many other generations and versions. Such as:

  •  iPod Touch

The iPod Nano second generation (2G) was released in September of 2006 and features:

  • Aluminum-finish
  • Blue, pink, green, black, and silver colors
  • 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB hard drive space.
  • Slender look that can fit in a pocket
  • Photo supported
  • User friendly
  • Search function
  • Language changer
  • Games
  • Colored screen
  • Pin functionality

First impressions of the Nano when removing it from the box were that it had a very sleek and stylish design. It's compact and lightweight design made the unit very portable and stored easily (in a pocket or purse). This unit also supports photo viewing and features an extended battery life of up to 14 hours. The design and layout of the unit makes it very easy to use and features a 1.5 inch vibrant bright screen. Since the iPod Nano released in a multitude of colors and sizes, it made the unit more unique than other products available on the market at the time, which is appealing to consumers who want to be more selective about the color, design and size of their MP3 players. It's also manufactured to be very sturdy and is usually able to withstand a large amount of abuse (i.e. dropping it, sitting on it, putting it in your purse or pocket, etc.).

As with most products, there are a few negatives to the 2G Nano. The unit does not feature a built in FM tuner nor does it provide any recording capabilities. It doesn’t play any video and not all of the color options are available to all memory sizes.

For those who want an 8GB in another color than black, there is a special addition red that can be found online at ebay.com and amazon.com. Though, this red addition can be pricey at a range of $199-$499 depending on who you go through. The 2nd generation has been discontinued in stores and Apple's website, but can still be found online at places like Amazon and eBay. Most of the 2Gs in any other color than red have been found to be very cheap, at a price range of $40-$60. The black is still standing above the rest, in terms of cost, in comparison to the other colors available, at a price range of $160-$200.

The bottom line, the second-generation iPod Nano has its moments of glory being the offspring to all the newer versions of iPods. It's a great player if a person can get around the cons and it’s suitable to a variety of users.
