GPS navigation units have revolutionized how Americans find their way while driving. Automotive GPS units have progressed from expensive, permanently installed devices to today’s smart phones where everyone has a GPS navigator in hand.

However, safely mounting the phone in the car can be a bit challenging. While some must be screwed in place or mounted with permanent adhesives, many drivers favor the flexibility of a suction cup type mount. However, suction cups often don’t “suck” enough to say on the windshield and are stymied by the textured surface of many automotive dashboards.

Enter the iOttie Easy One Touch Universal Windshield mount. Priced at a mere $20 or so, at first glance, it seems too cheap to get the job done. However, this little gem performs well-above its bargain price.

This mount does a terrific job of both gripping your smart phone (tested with an iPhone 5, but the manufacturer states it is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy line as well as HTC smart phones) and tenaciously holding onto the car.

At the base, the iOttie has a 2 inch diameter suction cup with an adhesive that both enhances the holding power of the cup and fills in those small irregularities on the dashboard without leaving any residue when removed. Simply apply the suction cup to whatever surface you wish in the car and push down a tightening lever and the mount is secure. Removal can take a little effort as the adhesive is a bit tenacious. After a while, the suction cup stopped holding well. However simply follow the manufacturer’s directions and rinse the cup with clean, cold water and allowed it to air dry to restore the adhesive to like-new condition.

On the other end is a spring loaded clamp. Simply squeeze two handles to open the clamp and place your phone in the cradle. When you seat the phone and depress a button in the cradle, the spring is released and the clamps secure your device. The clamp is simple to operate with one hand, so popping your phone in and out of the iOttie is quick and easy.

There is a short arm with two adjustment screws that allow you to adjust the angle and viewing position. The only minor quibble with the iOttie is that these screws feel cheap and are a bit difficult to tighten correctly.

Overall, the iOttie Easy One Touch exceeds expectations. Beside the somewhat cheap build feel, it is highly recommend for anyone looking for a flexible, secure way to mount a smart phone in a car.
