Once upon a time, Intelligentsia Broadway Coffeebar, at 3123 N. Broadway St., Chicago, IL 60657, was the best place to get together with friends and business colleagues to enjoy a great cup of coffee, dessert, or a delicious snack. The interior of the cafe was delightful as well: it had the fireplace, comfortable leather couches and armchairs, and the walls displayed the pleasing to the eye artistic decor.
You would be totally disappointed with Intelligentsia Cafe now. You would not find there even the traces of the fireplace, nor leather couches and chairs, or the artistic decor. The place looks plain, shabby, uninviting, and the food is a total disappointment. There were total six choices on the menu: old, funky looking brownies, stale chocolate chip cookies, plain and sad looking croissants, and something else not worth mentioning. Mocha and Hot Chocolate were passable, but not outstanding.
You would think with the Borders and Barnes & Noble are out of the picture (they were famous for their great coffee shops), Intelligentsia would blossom, or at least, not decline.
Unfortunately, Intelligentsia's "golden years" are over (refer to my early article at Examiner Intelligentsia Coffeebar best meeting place for intellectuals).
