The Art of the Cookie: Baking up Inspiration by the Dozen book by Shelly Kaldunski arrived in the nick of time here in Seattle. True to its title, as soon as the packaging was ripped off the recipes and confectionary photos inspired a round of holiday baking. Three recipes were sampled and given thumbs up approval from all members of the household. The lemon window pane cookies took the drab sugar cookie to new heights with the addition of lemon curd in the middle. This cookie was so highly rated by family tasters it’s destined as a holiday favorite. The gingerbread cookie recipe was sweet and spicy and firm enough to make the dough into cutouts for the gingerbread house. Lastly the chocolate butterscotch crackles were fudgy and delicious. A cookie-brownie dusted with powdered sugar. What’s not to love?
Kadunski was a food editor with Martha Stewart and the over 40 cookie recipes reflect attention to detail and perfect artistry. This cookbook is a joy to thumb through and marvel at the different cookie creations, it truly is cookie art. During the holidays the family tradition of baking cookies and sharing them with friends and neighbors creates special memories. The Art of the Cookie recipe collection looks like a treasured trove to start some new Christmas classics.
