This film is not a story of what really goes on in the movie. This documentary movie looks more at society and how it accepted the arrival of the movie. The times were ripe for a movie that pushed the envelope. From the time it first was shown Deep Throat was considered to be nothing more than obscenity. The films major scene was a blow job that the female star Linda Lovelace did to the male star Harry Reems.

Gerard Damiano who directed the movie was a hair stylist by trade who saw an opportunity to make some extra money shooting some porn. As a stylist he was able to consider the idea that a sexual revolution was taking place in society. He just wanted to be part of it. He had no idea of what was about to take place.

When the movie opened up in Times Square New York City in June 1972 it was a hit. More people had come into that theatre than in many years past. When the city shut it down the first time more people just kept coming to see it. When the movie got a blurb in the New York Times many thousands came to see it. Celebrity alike were seen at the theatre. It was novelty of sorts.

Hugh Hefner and Larry Flynt saw the problems coming to the industry when the closings came not just in New York but across the country.

In the first court case, the Judge in New York declared it indecent and obscene. A few years later the courts would have it back again and once again it was dubbed obscene. Larry Parrish who prosecuted this case would make a name for himself with it' decision.

The point of all this is the actors who were in the movie received pennies for the movie. Harry Reems would spend time in jail for his appearance in the film. The people who made money on this film were some theatre owners who ran it and the lawyers who tried the cases. Nobody ever made any money on this film.

Directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato brought a very interesting movie to the screen. It ties all the knots to the story of this movie and the trials and troubles it brought to all involved. It is worth seeing as it is history and it shows just how prudish we can be at times.
