Indigo Coastal Shanty, located at 1402 Reynolds Street in Brunswick, Georgia, looks sketchy from the outside. Colorful and artistic, yes, but also, trapped in another time. Upon closer inspection though, this gem of a restaurant offers some of the most spectacular low-key Southern flavor in the area.
The inside resembles a small-town café as one would see in a 1950’s television show: wholesome, homey, and warm. The scents of fish, burgers, and a vast array of veggie dishes fill the air. Chef Kate Buchanan has created a warm, fresh, rich, colorful menu for both lunch and dinner. This author opted for the Pimiento Burger—a super cheap option at $6.50—and enjoyed it with a traditional southern Sweet Tea.
Enjoy your lunch on the back patio outside under an enormous old tree (watch out for falling acorns!) strung with white lights. The atmosphere is laid-back, peaceful, and cheerful--teal wooden picnic tables and hanging Spanish Moss complete the look. The Pineapple Upside Down Cake appears to be phenomenal and there is definitely enough to share with a friend or date. Other tasty options include Fried Green Tomatoes, black beans and rice, and the Point Loma Fish Sandwich. Both lunch and dinner menus available. Definitely worth a stop!
