Comfort food from another country
Pretty, floral curtains and white linen tablecloths adorn the décor at India's Restaurant. The staff, the men dressed in traditional Sikh turbans and the women in bright, colorful saris, is friendly and welcoming. Undoubtedly, the food here has been voted by a local paper as top-notch because of its courteous people and wallet-friendly lunch buffet. For only $6.99, customers can explore a variety of dishes common to the Indian subcontinent. Fresh cucumber, sliced carrots, and tomatoes are offered on the small salad bar along with sweet tamarind sauce, spicy green chili and red hot onion which can flavor any dish in any combination. Cool, fresh yogurt, an Indian staple, is good as well. The modest buffet offerings keep locals pleased. Try the tender chicken tandoori, chicken legs and thighs barbequed brilliant red in a traditional clay oven for it is the best on the buffet, especially with grilled onions and the soft naan bread. The chicken tikka, boneless cubes of chicken breast marinated in yogurt, garlic, and spices, is yummy over Basmati rice. Typically, there are several legume and vegetable dishes including dal, well-seasoned lentils, saag, spinach with paneer, which is cheese, or potato, and chana masala, chickpeas with herbs and spices. The vegetable pakora, veggies fried in batter, is good with the tamarind sauce. A cool, mango lassi, the sweet, yogurt drink that is similar to but more healthy than the American milkshake, is the perfect lunch hour treat. Lunch is available Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and begins on Saturday at 12 noon.
