Cancer patients, victims of violence, those facing mental health challenges, traumatic injury survivors, and those under intense stress are facing enough. To add to that, they could also face hair loss due to increased stress, chemotherapy, radiation, medication, surgery, balding or the incident itself may have caused hair loss. For them hair extensions are not a vain attempt at looking like a movie star. For them, they see an answer. They use hair extensions to cover their loss and aid in the rebuilding of their self-esteem and self-image.
When you walk into Danni J.’s studio, you feel like you are about to become a work of art. The look of the studio is contemporary with an inviting red-black-and white décor. Soft music playing gently in the background while she tells you to take a seat on the couch for a chat. The chat is not about what hair style you want, but about who you are as a person – mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. Danni J. is an artist who wants to get to know her canvas before she begin creating. She asks about your history (hair care and otherwise), whether you are one who can stick to a regiment, and why you are at her studio. She says, “I want to know about the spirit and energy of my clients. The client must be the right fit. I have to be the right fit for them.”
If you ask her story, she will tell you. As a survivor, she understands the importance of anonymity. Danni J. does not give her location until she speaks with you personally. “I am all about my clients feeling comfortable. Yes, I have clients who are well-known, but I offer the same confidentiality to all my clients. I have clients who are cancer patients, domestic violence victims, etc.” On the wall of the studio it says, “May all who enter as a guest, leave as friends.” That is the vibe of the studio .
Danni J. operates her studio with professionalism and in the full spirit of excellence. As a hair care educator, she extends herself beyond that of a stylist. Every client who walks through her door will learn about their hair. Eating and exercise habits are discussed and regimens developed. Since beauty comes from the inside out, Danni J. feels it is irresponsible of her to only address your outside beauty without dealing with internal issues. She does not approach this as a therapist, but that of a trusted friend.
Her most popular service is hair extensions. As a Recommended Stylist of Wagman Hair, she suggests the natural body texture of hair. “It holds curls, especially in a warm or humid environment.” When asked if her weaving styles (using the Wagman Natural Body hair) could hold up to summertime fun and a soak in the pool, she answered, “DEFINITELY”. Danni J. informs her clients that the texture of the natural body client adds to the value of the product. According to the stylist, once the curls fall naturally as a result of humidity and/or gravity, you are left with a nice loose wavy look. For the fifth year, Danni J. is preparing a fashion show to take place in North Philly on 12th street. The fashion show is for the community and by the community. Danni J. recounted the story of a young lady who approached her asking to model in the fashion show. The young lady felt this was her only way to ever be a “Top Model”. The Labor Day event was originally done as a family gift to Danni J.’s mother. Since it has grown to an event requiring all the resources and talent in the community. This year they are expecting their largest turnout yet. The prayer is that the event will get the sponsors and donations it needs to meet its successful potential.
