Imagine Dragons may be the hottest band you've never heard of. Everyone knows their songs, as they've been dominating the charts all year long with massive hits like "Radioactive", "It's Time", and their latest, "Demons". Rolling Stone called "Radioactive" the "biggest rock hit of the year." And for the boys from Las Vegas, Nevada, it seems they are truly in awe of their own accomplishments. Yet they aren't necessarily a household name....yet.
But with all the success of 2013 behind them and continuing a headlining arena tour on the horizon for 2014, it seems like the band's notoriety is just about to reach a whole new level. Judging by their performance at the All State Fan Fest in New Orleans, Louisiana, on New Years Day, it's well-deserved.
Imagine Dragons took the stage at exactly 6:15 p.m. (unusual in an industry where major artists sometimes make the crowd wait an hour or better to grace the stage with their presence). The band didn't rely on gimmicks or auto tune to entertain- they lead with the music. Frontman Dan Reynolds held the audience captive, talking about his love for the city between songs, and relaying gratitude for the thousands that showed up. He spoke of "beignets" and "olive sandwiches" (better known as muffalettas to locals), both getting a chuckle out of the crowd.
It was a solid set, filled with their own hits and a cover of the U2 classic "With or Without You." The percussion pieces of the show, where even Reynolds takes on a drum, really got the crowd moving and dancing. Surprisingly, the light rain didn't seem to bother anyone, as it seemed like no one moved for the hour and fifteen minute duration of the show.
