We decided to eat here based on a recommendation from some friends. It was Dine LA, which is usually a good way to sample a new place without too much of a financial investment. It now inhabits the famed Orso where we used to dine upon occasion.
This is a lovely spot. First of all, the decor is opulent, reminding me of the thick wood persuasions from many old churches I've visited in Europe. I don't know how much they spent on remodeling Orso, but if the menu prices are any indication, it wasn't cheap. If you're not into this sort of decor, you might find it a bit over the top, but I enjoyed it. The patio is lovely, completely enclosed to deter the elements.
I found the portions (octopus tartare) to be a bit spartan. Actually, I wondered if there was really any octopus in the dish at all. My other two courses were divine; sea bass and the gelato for dessert. Our dining companions seem to enjoy their meals as well, although from the looks of all our dishes, the portions were quite modest.
Their wine list is ample, but on the pricey side, so we opted for two 1/2 liters of Dolcetto, which were more affordable.
I'm not sure I'd go here again. Even nicer restaurants give you sizable portions, which this restaurant does not do. I'll bet we all felt a bit hungry after the meal. Out of fairness, it would be good to go back and sample some other items, as the few courses we had were tasty, but the cost for the four of us was about $200, not including tip. I've had better meals for that amount of money.
