Ian Hunter and the Rant Band charm The Fillmore again

It is a remarkable thing to be able to walk into a venue the size of The Fillmore for concert by Mr. Ian Hunter - an artist of true iconic status. The fabled history of the club lent just the right atmosphere to a show that spanned the decades, from the late '60s to his most recent release - 'When I'm President'. The anticipation in the room was high and he and The Rant Band did not disappoint. Ian Hunter was characteristically the picture of quintessential cool as he took to the stage, sunglasses on of course, and launched into 'What For'. The set was a perfect balance of the legendary and the new. There was not a dull moment in the generous set and the ebb and flow of it was just right for the satisfying ride.

Now the time has come to select one or two of the many outstanding moments that night. From the very first note of 'Michael Picasso', the beautiful tributary piece to his dear friend and former musical partner Mick Ronson, you could have heard a pin drop in the full house. To ease us out of our emotional state following that one, Ian and the band flowed into 'Ta Shunka Witco' - a dreamy, almost shoegaze number in honor of the Oglala Sioux Indian chief. Next we were dancing again to 'Sweet Jane' which was the last song of the set proper. The encore was generous as well and welcomed by the crowd whose love for Ian Hunter was quite apparent. The love was returned as it was evident that Mr. Hunter and his band: James Mastro and Mark Bosch - guitars, Paul Page - bass, Dennis DaBrizzi - keyboards, and Steve Holley - drums, put their hearts into this rewarding night out. Come back soon.
