There are certain places you may not go often, for no real reason because they are nonetheless memorable and entertaining. Mario’s Double Daughter’s Salotto is such a place, but every visit inspires another one.
The décor is out of Dorothy’s, or Alice’s, or Hitchcock’s surreal dream, or perhaps a Tim Burton film, starting with the enormous, seemingly sound-proof entry door. The interior features gothic trees with white holiday lights draped on year-round. Dangling from the ceiling are doves and other creatures. The floors are hardwood, and the walls are black brick with glittery white specks. Lighting overall is gloomy, though fitting.
Add to this description the odd details, such as the roomy red booths that could seat an ample group. In the center of the tables are glowing red bubbles that channel ET’s heart-light. Bar stools drip red, resembling nothing else so much as a Maker’s Mark bottle (which the bar has!). Upstairs are red and blue lighted panels that remind one of the Simon Says electronic game of yore. The restrooms are similarly dark but intriguing, with crescent moons floating over the doors á la outhouse and a most interesting faucet for the sink.
The beer list is varied and highly localized (Great Divide, Oskar Blues, Wynkoop), and cocktails are inspired. Try a Father Rodier (Clementine vodka, St. Germain, and lemonade—yum!). High-end liquors (Ketel 1, Knob Creek, Patron) tempt with their huge bottles atop the bar. Happy hour occurs nightly from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., featuring $3 wells, $4 wines and drafts, and $5 specialty cocktails.
Hungry? No problem. Two-Fisted Mario’s, next door, supplies the pizza, whole pies or by the slice. Pizza is available late, which is truly beloved for the hungry drinker who forgets about the dinner hour.
This unique drinking and viewing experience is complemented by music many nights of the week. Tonight features DJ Spencer Maple in addition to First Friday specials from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. Check out the calendar for more music—and other—events: http://www.doubledaughters.com/main.html.
This coming Monday is the last night of the bar’s hosting Geeks Who Drink, which is truly a shame. Double Daughter’s is a unique trivia environment with a fun and feisty host and wait staff who are totally into the experience. In addition, trivia specials include $1 cheese pizza slices and $4 drafts during the game. Though there are other locales offering GWD on Mondays, this particular place will be missed. Check it out before it’s gone!
