In a world dominated by chemically and genetically enhanced or adulterated foods finding something purely organic is, quite literally, a breath of fresh air. “I Am Vegetable” is a one of a kind celebration of the most neglected food group as well as all forms of entertainment. At Lot 613, Dream Circus Theatre brings us a sensory overload of stimulating sights, sounds, smells, and tastes.
Upon entry to the costumed dance party, patrons are given a name tag declaring their vegetable identity. But simply becoming a vegetable is not enough. Once veggified, one must pass through the threshold where the purification process happens, creating an organic atmosphere for all within.
The first thing you’ll once inside are the dolled up “Vegetable Voyeurism”, or simply put, a rotating roster of dolled up veggies acting out the process of photosynthesis, and other popping/locking stationary dance moves. This main room includes a n expansive dance floor with luminous nature décor and hard dance music blasting through several large speakers.
Just outside of the main room, veg-heads will find another stage with more downtempo, chill DJs, as well as so-random-it’s-artsy visualizations. Cheri Rae Russell serves up the absolute freshest, tastiest, and inspired dishes you’ll find around LA and serves them right in front of you, then watches you eat her meal with bated breath, requiring your complete and full satisfaction. In the third room, costumed carrots and bunnies dance side by side to well prepared house music from several select DJs. The multiple visualization projections happening all the while in this room are intriguingly captivating. In every corner of the venue there are colorful plant and nature cutouts, some nearly as massive as the rooms they hang, which add to the wondrous atmosphere of the party.
Arguably the main attraction, or at least one of the cooler facets of this event, is the communal organic soup brewed outside. Consisting of whatever vegetables people decided to bring, and loads and LOADS of spices, this experiment in palate shocked everyone when it turned out tasting… surprisingly delicious!
A base of good music sprinkled with a stunning A/V set up, eye-catching art here and there, a subtle taste of nice staff, hearty food available, and most important of all, friendly attendees; that is the precise recipe for a good time, and I Am Vegetable nailed it.
