Philadelphia's punk and post-hardcore five-piece Goddamnit have recently released their debut full-length How to Take the Burn on Creep Records. This album is surprisingly short for a fourteen-song collection, clocking in at a little under forty minutes, but it is quality over quantity. Bringing to mind punk bands like Jawbreaker and Off With Their Heads, and post-hardcore bands like Small Brown Bike and Hot Water Music, Goddamnit's How to Take the Burn proves a solid debut from a band with a lot of promise. Not only do they offer heaping portions of punk and post-hardcore on this release, they also give us some pretty impressive acoustic songs.

How to Take the Burn opens with "Hear About It," a builder of a song structure and post-hardcore standout. The title track follows, with a nice, catchy riff accompanied by big chords and drums which fluctuate between simple punctuating cymbal crashes and a faster punk beat, and scratchy yet expressive vocals. "We Play Craps" and "Shitty Scenes," two of my favorite tracks on this album, exists somewhere between hard-hitting and melodic. "It's Not Astronomy" and "With Whiskey" are the acoustic tracks, and both highly enjoyable listens.

While How to Take the Burn isn't a landmark album, it shows that Goddamnit have it in them to write and record such a release. And while this album doesn't flow as well as the listener would like, which is no doubt due the order in which they put the songs, it stands as a worthwhile collection of original songs by a band that clearly has a lot to offer the scene.

How to Take the Burn was released May, 2014 by Creep Records on CD and LP formats.
