How to Train Your Dragon 2

Since How to Train Your Dragon was one of the most successful movies of 2010, it was natural that plans for a sequel would immediately be made. Of course it takes a few years to make these animated movies. But 4 years later, How to Train Your Dragon 2 has arrived. And if you enjoyed the first one, you’ll most likely enjoy the second one as well.

It’s now 5 years later, and Hiccup is 20 years old. He’s still skinny and lanky, but taller and a more confident person overall since teaming up with his dragon buddy Toothless. Thanks to his accomplishments in the first film, dragons are now everywhere and a welcome part of the civilization. Hiccup’s father seems prouder than ever of his son this time around. And if you were wondering what ever happened to his mother, that question is answered. It seems like everything is fine in the world, but if that were the case we wouldn’t have a second movie. So a villain shows up who’s controlling the dragons in an evil way. He sees the dragons more as servants to use and does not see the goodness in them as Hiccup has demonstrated to everyone else.

The movie leads up to a climactic battle sequence between the good guys and the bad guys (each with their dragons) of course. I found the first film a bit more interesting in watching the bond form between Hiccup and his dragon. Here it has already been established, and it’s more about keeping Toothless from crossing over to the dark side through the lure of the new villain. The visuals are still pretty spectacular for an animated film and it’s great to look at. The story is so-so, but like I said it’s a good film to watch if you like these characters and want to continue to follow them through their journey. Another sequel has already been announced.
