‘How I Met Your Mother’ ‘Slapsgiving 3’ review: Three masters of slapistry

'How I Met Your Mother' 'Slapsgiving 3'

When it comes to the slap bet on “How I Met Your Mother,” it’s hard to go wrong after a stellar seven years of slaps. But on the January 13 episode “Slapsgiving 3,” it was a bit too over the top. In other words, it was like much of the rest of season nine: the episode felt like filler more than anything else.

Marshall (Jason Segel) tells the tale of how he got ready for Slapsgiving 3 on "How I Met Your Mother"

The entire episode of the CBS comedy “HIMYM” was devoted to the ridiculous backstory of this particular slap. As the story goes, Marshall (Jason Segel) wanted to learn how to make the next slap as “painful as humanly possible.” That’s why he found some slap masters to train him in the art of a slap of a thousand -- or a million, take your pick -- exploding your suns. They each taught him one virture in the art of slapistry. Red Bird, a.k.a. Robin (Cobie Smulders), taught speed; White flower, or Lily (Alyson Hannigan), taught strength; and the Calligrapher, Ted (Josh Radnor) naturally, taught accuracy, even after the heart was slapped right out of him.

Sure “How I Met Your Mother” “Slapsgiving 3” had its funny moments, like the slapping tree, a montage of all of Barney’s gullible chicks over the years (including Nora played by Nazanin Boniadi), and Marshall’s quips -- such as “think of it as a high five to your stupid face” -- but it lacked the spontaneity and purpose that past slaps have.

Because, really, all the other slaps seemed to have more of a purpose. In this particular slap, it was all filler, including the moment Marshall purposely missed Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) so he’d go running into the woods.

The one saving grace of this episode though was the very end. After all, what’s not to love about Boys II Men singing about slaps along with a wonderful montage of the slaps over the years? Plus, this wasn’t the last slap. As Marshall so kindly reminds Barney, there’s still one slap left, and only a handful more episodes to go.
