“How I Met Your Mother” season nine is supposed to be all about Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Barney’s (Neil Patrick Harris) legendary wedding weekend. But if the first few episodes are any indication, along with the September 30th episode “Last Time in New York,” it’s all about Ted (Josh Radnor) and his continuing “obsession” with Robin.
Sure wedding stuff still happened, namely Barney and Robin avoided the “zombie” elderly relatives as they hunted for a creative place to have sex, but the third episode of the “HIMYM” season largely focused on Ted and his list of things he wanted to do before he left for New York. The only problem? Only Lily (Alyson Hannigan) knows about his plans to depart the grand city of New York.
That’s why Ted has completed everything on his "Last Time in New York" list, except having one last scotch with Barney. Plus, Ted has been avoiding Barney and Robin lately. Let’s forget the fact that he’s spent plenty of time with them since they got engaged. But now that the wedding is just about here? He’s avoiding his lost lady love and her future husband.
It’s all a bit frustrating really. To imagine that somehow Ted finally gets over Robin over the course of 56 hours or so AND meets the woman of his dreams, the yet unnamed mother, is a hard pill to swallow.
But Barney might be the key to how this all goes down on “How I Met Your Mother” season nine. Because the groom has a secret too: he saw Robin and Ted at the carousel the day she was frantically searching for her locket.
So why did he wait until now to bring it up to Ted? Chances are he sees Ted as no threat. After all, Robin is clearly head of heels in love with him, the guy she’s marrying, not her ex. But if Ted has been pulling away lately, Barney is finally confronting the situation head on, which is just further proof that he’s sure grown up in recent seasons.
And if Barney and Ted do hash things out about Robin — rather than just cry over spilled 60-year-old spilled scotch — then maybe Ted will finally be on his way to really getting over her. Let’s hope so, because Ted's dwelling is sure getting old.
"How I Met Your Mother" airs on CBS Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT.
