‘How I Met Your Mother’ ‘Bass Player Wanted’ review: A first drink

'How I Met Your Mother' 'Bass Player Wanted'

Throughout “How I Met Your Mother” season nine, 30-year Glen McKenna scotch has had a big role to play. But it became even more important to the group of friends, Ted (Josh Radnor) in particular, during the “Bass Player Wanted” episode, which aired on December 16.

No one is very happy in this CBS comedy episode. Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) start fighting when Lily learns that Robin is siding with Marshall in the Italy versus judgeship debate. Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) learns that Ted is going to Chicago, and that Ted is only giving him, essentially, a day’s notice. And the future ‘mother’ is being kicked out of the band she started, prompting her to “steal” the leader singer Darren’s (Andrew Rannells) car (but then gas it up and return it washed). Every single one of these fights on “HIMYM,” in fact, are the fault of the lead singer.

Darren is the devil, what with the way he manages to put a wedge between best friends wherever he goes. All it takes is him making you feel adorable and hilarious, then finding a flimsy connection with you, sharing a deep personal secret (usually stolen from an animated kid film), and then doing an emotional prostate exam. After that, he shares your secret, and the fights begin.

Since the ‘mother’ isn’t good at confrontation, she thinks she’d rather quit the band she started than stand up to the devil on “How I Met Your Mother” “Bass Player Wanted.” That is until she meets Marshall on the side of the road and gives him a lift back to Farhampton Inn. “I’ll yell, ‘the lead singer sucks skunk junk,’” Marshall tells the yet unnamed mother. But she doesn’t want that, because Marshall has convinced her to take the band back.

Then again, she gives up easily on her plan once she realizes how Darren reels people in, like the bartender. She muses about how karma doesn’t always work.

What she doesn’t realize is what’s happening on the back porch of the Farhampton Inn. To prove how much Barney means to him on “HIMYM,” Ted has stolen a bottle of 30-year Glen McKenna scotch. With the gang reunited — after Lily pummels a Marsh-pillow to Marshall’s dismay — they’re finally having a long-awaited toast. And then Darren runs into Ted, breaking the third McKenna scotch bottle of the season. Just like that, Ted has had enough. He punches Darren, which sends the lead singer devil onto the ground. And because of Ted, he decides he’s done with drama and he’s quitting the band.

Sure it’s convenient, but it’s cute, because the bass player ‘mom’ is staying for the wedding… and she’s buying the best man a double of the best scotch the bar has. “And that kids is the first drink your mother ever bought me.” It was the perfect sweet ending to an entertaining episode, even if Ted doesn’t know who bought him the drink.

But the entertainment isn’t over yet either. Barney decides to tease Marshall about missing his rehearsal dinner, prompting Marshall to give him his gift early. Marshall raises his hand, and Barney says in the final “HIMYM” moment, “Oh god, it’s the fourth slap, I don’t know why I was so obnoxious.” Best. Slap. Ever.

“How I Met Your Mother” airs on CBS Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT.
