If you happen to be traveling between Hamilton and Medina, TX, you'll find yourself at a little known place called Cranfills Gap. With a population of about 350 it will come and go quickly if your not paying attention. This matter because almost hidden from view on FM-219 (also known as 3rd St.) where it intersects TX-22 is a great little family bar and grill. Horny Toad Bar & Grill. This is a great biker-friendly little joint. Twice I have been here for a cool refreshment. The first time there were bikes parked on both sides of the street and it was standing room only. The second visit, this past week, was different... just barely. We were able to get there a few minutes after opening and managed to get seats indoors. This was good for a couple of reasons, first of course being that we were able to sit and enjoy our lunch and beverages and second, the outside temps were in the 40's. This was the most likely. Even so, a fair amount of bikes did push through the cold to arrive shortly after we did. I can't put a finger on any one specific thing specific drives bikers to this place, unless you like friendly people and good food. Which brings us to lunch.
Lunch was a simple burger and fries, but it was a really good burger. I opted for the pepperjack cheese burger, add bacon and served on a jalapeno cheese bun. Served with the usual lettuce, tomatoes and onions, it was a great combination of flavors with the bun being a very noticeable improvement over your typical burger bun. Fries are practically mandatory with a burger like this but you actually have your choice of fries, onion rings or tater tots.
