Homemade ice cream at Izzy’s

It seems like I have been waiting for months for the weather to finally warm up so I can go to one of the fabulous ice cream shops in the Twin Cities. Going to college at the University of St. Thomas, one of my favorite places for ice cream is Izzy’s Ice Cream Cafe.

Izzy’s is proud to offer homemade artisan ice cream in over 30 flavors. It’s easy to find out what flavors are in stock on a particular day by going to Izzy’s Flavor Up site. Besides their traditional scoops, Izzy’s also offers ice cream cupcakes, ice cream sandwiches and ice cream lollipops.

What I love about Izzy’s besides their neighborhood vibe, is their unique flavors like Norweigan Chai, Buttered Sweet Corn and Bananas Foster. With so many flavors to choose from, it’s hard to make a decision, but luckily they offer free samples so you can make the perfect choice. Plus, you get a free small Izzy scoop on top of your ice cream, so you can choose an additional flavor.

On a recent trip to Izzy’s, we ordered a double scoop in a waffle cone with a scoop of Slow Your (Nut) Roll, Ch-Ch Cherry Bomb and an Izzy scoop of Bananas Foster. The first two flavors are specials this year from their annual flavor contest. The Slow Your (Nut) Roll is vanilla ice cream with crushed Pearson's nut roll, caramel, nougat, and fudge swirls and the Ch-Ch Cherry Bomb is chocolate ice cream with Japanese plum wine and grenadine-cherry. Both of these flavors were tasty, but I preferred the nut roll. I loved the combination of the sweet vanilla with the salty caramel and big chunks of Pearson’s nut roll. This ice cream was definitely a winner. Even better than the nut roll ice cream was the Bananas Foster ice cream. It really did taste like bananas foster with the sweet banana ice cream, brown sugar coated bananas and warm cinnamon swirls. I could definitely have eaten a whole scoop of this ice cream. I can’t wait to go back for more ice cream while the weather stays warm.

When you go: Izzy’s is located at 2034 Marshall Avenue in St. Paul. They are open Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 am to 10:30 pm. Izzy’s has an active social media presence on Facebook and Twitter so you can keep up to date on their contests and flavors.
