It's been two weeks since Showtime aired the "Homeland" season finale and I still can't shake it. SPOILER ALERT - shop reading if you don't want to know what happens.
How could the season end with Brody (Damian Lewis) dying (he was killed in a public hanging in the Middle East)? Even worse, Saul (Mandy Patinkin) was forced to retire from the CIA, and what has to be the worst story idea of all time is a very pregnant Carrie (Claire Danes) remains with the CIA and is named the director of Istanbul.
Now you can bet with these turn of events the internet went crazy with the battle cry of - No Brody, No Show! Many vowed to cancel Showtime for good.
The finale wasn't the only misstep of the show this season. The whole season seemed disjointed. The first three episodes disappointed as they focused on an even more neurotic Carrie cooped up in a mental institution, while Brody was nowhere to be seen. When he finally pops up, we discover him hiding out in a hellhole in Venezuela hooked on street drugs. And to further alienate the audience, a tedious storyline about Brody's teen daughter emerged and focused on her suicidal tendencies and running away with a troubled teen boy. Audiences shook their heads and wondered why, why, why? Even more disturbing was the terrible use of the wonderful actress Morena Baccarin, who plays Brody's wife Jessica. She was relegated to the clueless, nagging mother to the depressed teen.
For any of you living under a rock, "Homeland" is a critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning darling that follows the CIA as they track down terrorists and prove or disprove that an American POW is also a terrorist. The first two seasons are great for binge viewing, so, check it out if you can.
Meanwhile, back to the "Homeland" season finale - so, the show has definitely put itself in a pickle. Is Brody really dead or was the hanging faked? Does the audience really want to see a pregnant Carrie raise a child? What about Saul? Will the audience stick around to find out how this mess is cleared up? That all remains to be seen. I'm still on the fence and will keep you posted.
