“Utsubora: The Story of a Novelist” is a manga by Asumiko Nakamura. Shun Mizoragi is an author struggling with writer’s block. He gets involved in a writing contest where he steals a manuscript from Aki Fujino, an unknown author and passes it off as his own. He gets a phone call from the police, saying that Aki has committed suicide. To make things more complicated, a girl named Sukura appears, claiming to be Aki’s twin sister. What will be the result of these events?
This is an enjoyable story, although it would have been interesting to explore the nature of plagiarism and what types of people would be willing to risk their reputations for fame and wealth. Despite what the blurb suggests, this isn’t a revenge story, although Shun does come to some sort of understanding about why he did it. The artwork has a sparse, muted style suited to the story. Honolulu manga fans will find this to be an interesting manga.
