“Tropic of the Sea” is a manga by the late director Satoshi Kon. Yosuke’s family have a tradition that they receive an egg from a mermaid. When it matures, they return it to the sea, where the mermaids bless the town with plenty of fish and good weather. However, the seaside town is declining, so Yosuke’s dad sells the family’s land and turns their shrine into a tourist trap. Will Yosuke be able to carry on the family tradition?

It’s a huge shame that Satoshi Kon didn’t become a mangaka because he is really good at it. While the plot is a little rough around the edges, it’s still pretty good. The best thing about the story is that the scientific method actually verified the existence of the mermaids rather than do the cliché of scientists being debunkers. The artwork is very good. Honolulu Satoshi Kon fans interested in his early works should read “Tropic of The Sea”.
