“Sweet Revolution” is a supernatural yaoi manga by Yukine Honami. Tatsuki and Ohta seem to be two ordinary young men who happen to be cousins. But the truth is that they’re supernatural creatures who have fled to the human world in order to escape from an arranged marriage that Tatsuki does not want to go through. Tatsuki is the Dragon King successor and possess the Nyoi-Houshu, a magical dagger which is the source of his power. Ohta is a Zashiki Warashi, a house spirit who lost his home and has become Tatsuki’s lover. However, Ohta is gravely injured, forcing Tatsuki to take him back to their realm in order to save him. Will they be able to stay together?
The main problem with the manga isn’t the idea that two different spirits could fall in love with each other, it’s that the author puts way too many human traits onto the couple rather than figure out how being a spirit affects their psychological outlook. It’s not to say that they wouldn’t be capable of caring or having morals and ethics. It’s just that they may not have some of the same hang ups that humans have. For example, they may think that marriage is a big waste of time and that the human couple should just live together. Another good example could be that if a human wants to become a supernatural creature, then they have the right to do it, just as long as they don’t do anything unethical. The author also missed a great opportunity to explore the emotional trauma of a Zashiki Warashi who lost his home. Is Tatsuki the emotional anchor that keeps Ohta from killing himself or becoming a vengeful spirit? And what do the other spirits think of a homeless Zashiki Warashi? Do they pity him or think he’s a freak? This is a decent manga for Honolulu yaoi fans.
