Holly's manga review: 'Stargazing Dog'

“Stargazing Dog” is a manga by Takashi Murakami. Oto-san is a friendly, laid back guy who accepts what life throws at him. When his wife divorces him and he loses the house, he and his dog Happaei go on a journey. The bond between them is unbreakable, even when Oto dies and Happaei is left alone. After he dies, their bodies are found by the police, which leads to a social worker investigating them.

The author manages to find some meaning and happiness in the story even though the owner and his dog die in an abandoned car. It’s a bummer that his ex-wife and daughter don’t find out what happen to him in the end, it would have been interesting to have seen their reactions. The artwork has a lovely, whimsical quality that makes the subject readable and oddly enjoyable. Honolulu manga fans should give this interesting manga a try.
