Holly's manga review: 'Sakuran'

“Sakuran” is a historical drama by Moyoco Anno. Kiyoha is an oiran, a courtesan who works in the red light district Yoshiwara, located in northeast Tokyo. She was sold at an early age and had to become tough in order to survive, much to the frustration of her caretakers. One day, she falls in love with a customer who may provide a way out. Can she escape and will she survive if she fails?

The main character is a jerk, but it is pretty understandable, since she’s had a pretty rough life. At the very least, while she is cynical, she does have a pretty strong will. The ending is pretty ambiguous as to Kiyoha’s ultimate fate. This may actually be a more effective criticism of the sex trade because the author doesn’t write it in a heavy handed manner. If they can handle the cynicism, Honolulu manga fans may like it.
