“Pure Trance” is a sci-fi manga by Junko Mizuno. In the future, society has been driven underground after the surface has been rendered uninhabitable. Eating disorders are on the rise, thanks to the only available food source: the nutrition capsule known as Pure Trance. The medical clinic that treats these disorders is under the director’s cruel grip. Nurse Kaori escapes from the clinic with three mysterious children, but what will they find on the abandoned surface?
This is a wonderfully weird manga that manages to be edgy and have a plausible happy ending. The art has a zany, cute style that oddly suits the story. The world feels internally consistent and real. It’s a shame that the author didn’t write any other stories set in the world of “Pure Trance”. At least the notes at the bottom of the pages are interesting. Honolulu manga fans who want an alternative manga that isn’t stereotypically grim should read “Pure Trance”.
