“Olympos” is a fantasy manga by Aki. Ganymede is a young man who was kidnapped by Apollo and made immortal. He spends his days trapped in a miniature garden at the playfully sadistic whim of Apollo. But even gods can feel the boredom that immortality brings, as Ganymede soon finds out as he interacts with Apollo, Poseidon, and Hades. Will he escape from his prison or will he forever be a pawn of Apollo?
While the story isn’t sure what it wants to be, there’s a contemplative tone that fits it surprisingly well. “Olympos” may have worked better if Apollo realized that being an immortal deity isn’t an excuse to act like a callous jerk and let Ganymede go. In fact, the story would have made the perfect existential metaphor about the transient nature of roles and how people cope when they’re abruptly taken away. Honolulu manga fans should give “Olympos” a look.
