“Interval” is a yaoi manga by Kaname Itsuki. Ayumu Kashiwagi is a track runner who has a crush on his best friend, Takahito Shinohara. However, his team mate Sawatari finds out about it and blackmails him into entering an abusive relationship with him. Things get worse when Sawatari shows some bits of emotional warmth to him. Will Ayumu continue to resist or will he surrender to Sawatari?
The main problem is that the story glorifies an abusive relationship; but to be honest, it’s a cliché that plagues at least one third of the yaoi stories. It would have worked much better if it was a rescue romance where Takahito saves Ayumu from Sawatari and realizes gender really doesn’t matter as long as you love each other. It’s such a shame as “Interval” has lovely artwork. Honolulu yaoi fans need to think long and hard before deciding if they want to read “Interval” or not.
