“Helter Skelter: Fashion Unfriendly” is a josei manga by Kyoko Okazaki. Liliko is a famous fashion model with a perfect body. But what the public doesn’t know is that her perfect body is kept that way due to endless rounds of cosmetic surgery and medication. When the beauty clinic that Liliko goes to gets investigated for shady business practices and unethical medical treatments, her perfect life comes crashing down.
The artwork has a nice edgy fell to it and the story is pretty good. Interestingly, we learn enough about the clinic’s background that some viewers may wish that the author would write a story focusing on the people who worked there and how they felt about their job. There’s a cool gothic undercurrent in the climax of the story, although some readers may be confused about what exactly happens to Liliko in the ending. Honolulu josei fans should pick up “Helter Skelter”.
