“Domu: a Child’s Dream” is a sci-fi manga by the author of “Akira”, Katsuhiro Otomo. A childlike old man holds the residents of an apartment complex hostage with his psychic powers. The police investigate a rash of ‘suicides’, but end up as victims of the old man’s powers. It’s up to another resident, a little girl who also has psychic powers to take a stand against the elderly despot.
This is an exciting, beautifully drawn predecessor to the world famous “Akira” series. The author has the wonderful ability to make an initially dark story become more hopeful in the end in a plausible, logical manner. There are a few characters that aren’t all that important to the plot, which is a bit of a shame as some of them, like the large, quiet man with developmental problems, are actually quite interesting. Honolulu “Akira” fans should give “Domu: a Child’s Dream” a look.
