“Blue Spring” is a manga anthology by Taiyo Matsumoto. ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It, Clap Your Hands’ revolves around a dangerous game. The player hangs on the railing of the school roof. The object of the game is to let go of the railing and clap your hands as many times as you can before grabbing the railing again. Whoever claps the most without falling to their death wins. ‘Revolver’ deals with three guys who find a gun with three bullets.
The artwork has a nicely chaotic feel to it, through it’s also pretty messy. The author has an uncanny knack for mixing a sense of wackiness into dark, edgy stories without feeling out of place. The story dealing with the railing game makes a weird sort of sense, although it’s a little surprising that the students are willing to risk getting caught by the teachers. Honolulu Taiyou Matsumoto fans will enjoy “Blue Spring”.
