Blood Plus: Kowloon Nights by Hirotaka Kisaragi, is a side story based on the anime series Blood Plus. Hong Kong police officer Nishi Tatsuyoshi is investigating a series of murders where the bodies are drained of blood. However, the closer he gets to the truth, the more obstacles are thrown in his way. Soon, he’s forced into an uneasy alliance with Red Shield and works with a mysterious cello player named Hagi. But what is the connection between the murders and the new drug sold by the Wong family, which they claim will give the users immortality.
The story is decent, although the reader will easily guess that the new drug would turn the users into a Chiropteran or a weird offshoot of the species. The artwork is gorgeous and interesting; the men look very beautiful while still looking like the classic version of masculinity. Thankfully, there are no cheap jibes at the United States, so North American readers can enjoy this manga without feeling offended. It would have been nice to delve deeper into Hagi’s character, though. Honolulu Blood Plus fans should give this volume a look.
