Holly's anime review: 'Tokyo Godfathers'

“Tokyo Godfathers” is a movie directed by the creator of “Paranoia Agent”, Satoshi Kon. Hana, an ex-drag queen entertainer, Gin, an alcoholic ex-bicycle racer and a teenage runaway named Miyuki are homeless people who find an abandoned infant on Christmas Eve. Their search for the child’s mother will have them tangle with Yakuza, hitmen and their own troubled pasts. Will they find the baby’s mother?

This is the best of Satoshi Kon’s films, mixing a very funny crime caper with drama. It also expounds brilliantly on the importance on not creating delusions in order to escape from your problems. The animation is lovely with a good use of lightening for dramatic effect. The only real problem is that there are no subtitles for the Latino characters. While it’s understandable from the storytelling angle, it will still irritate some fans. Honolulu Satoshi Kon fans should watch it as soon as they can.
