“The Garden of Words” is a romantic drama by director/screenwriter Makoto Shinkai. Takao is a high school student trying to find his purpose in life. He dreams of becoming a shoe designer. One day, he cuts school in order to sketch at a garden on a rainy day. He meets an older woman named Yukino. They keep meeting on rainy days in the garden, but they’re unable to confess their feelings to each other. Can they consummate their relationship before it’s too late?
This film is one of the better entries in Makoto Shinkai’s output because he’s very good at writing slice of life drama. While the climax does seem to come a bit out of left field, the melodrama is well written. The animation is lovely, with nice, moody music that gives the film a quiet, low key atmosphere. Honolulu Makoto Shinkai fans should definitely watch “The Garden of Words.”
