Holly's anime review: 'Requiem From the Darkness'

“Requiem From the Darkness” is a horror anime based on a series of novels. Momosuke is an aspiring writer who travels through Edo era Japan as he searches for a hundred ghost stories. He meets up with a small group whose job it is to punish the wicked: Mataiehi, the trickster priest, Ogin, the puppeteer and Nagamimi the bird caller. Momosuke will discover how dark the human soul can be. Will he survive his quest?

This is a series that plays out like a darker, more horrific version of “Scooby Doo”, with the added twist that the people investigating the cases are supernatural creatures themselves. The crazy animation serves the series very well and helps heighten the macabre elements. While we get the origin story for Ogin and Nagamimi to a certain extent, the viewer doesn’t get any background information on Mataiehi or a story explaining how they were recruited in the first place. Still, this is a fun, interesting anime for Honolulu horror fans.
