Holly's anime review: 'Betterman'

“Betterman” is a sci-fi/horror mecha series. Keita Aono was just an ordinary, mecha loving, high school student until he accidently falls into a mecha co-piloted by his childhood friend Hinoki Sai. They fight valiantly, but they get beaten up by an animatronic fishman. However, they are saved by the mysterious Lamia, who eats the Soma fruit in order to become Betterman. Now they must face the threat of the bizarre enemy known as Algernon.

“Betterman” is very good at producing atmospheric horror and the narrations for the episode previews are very creepy. The main problem is that the writers never let the mecha pilots of Akematsu Industries score a victory without Laima’s help. The viewer may wonder why the government doesn’t pull the plug on the group, despite the fact that they do try their hardest. Chandy is a really cool character that needed more exposure. Honolulu mecha fans will find “Betterman” to be an interesting series.
