Holly's anime review: 'Angel's Egg'

“Angel’s Egg” is a surreal movie directed by Mamoru Oshii. A young girl lives alone in a gothic city, guarding an egg. She spends her time collecting artifacts. One day, a man wielding a cross-like weapon on his back, arrives at the city. They travel to the girl’s home. He discovers that a rock craving of a strange tree reminds him one that he saw before. But he’s unaware of its location. What will ultimately result from the man and girl’s interactions with each other?

This movie pretty much lets the viewer decide what the character’s motivations are or what the Christian symbols stand for. That being said, it’s not a bad film. It’s slow pace fits the moody, somber atmosphere and story well. It also offers an interesting take on the Noah’s Ark myth that quietly reveals its connections to the main plot at the end of the movie. The animation is lovely. If they can handle the slow, ambiguous nature of the story, Honolulu Mamoru Oshii fans may like “Angel’s Egg”.
