The Galaxy Railways is a sci-if anime by the creator of Galaxy Express 999, Leiji Matsumoto. In the future, mankind has created railways that extend beyond the planets into the vast reaches of space. As a result, humanity forms the Space Defense Force in order to protect passengers from terrorists, aliens and hazardous asteroids. Manabu Yuuki is one of the youngest members who enlist after the deaths of his father and brother, members of the SDF who heroically sacrificed themselves in the name of duty. He’s assigned to the Sirius Platoon and begins his journey to the stars.
The Galaxy Railways shows that a master storyteller can breathe new life into genres with their creative styles and trademarks. While the show does tend to wander into the fantasy genre, it’s done well enough that it doesn’t feel out of place. The only real problem is that Bruce deserved a better sendoff than the one he got in the series. Layla seems more like a storytelling device than as a real character who aids the people of the Space Defense Force. The episodic nature of the stories works in the show’s favor. Honolulu Leiji Matsumoto fans should watch this show when they get the chance.
