Naruto Shippuden: The Movie is a film based off the second part of the Naruto manga. A powerful demon is released and attempts to take over the world in order to create his ‘Thousand Year’ Kingdom. The only person who can stop him is a priestess named Shion, who has the ability to seal him away. Naruto and his friends are sent to protect Shion and take her to the shrine where the demon’s body is kept. She explains that her predictions work by using other peoples’ lives to protect her own. She also predicts that Naruto will die, but he insists that’s not the case. Will he be able to escape his fate?
It’s obvious that the prophecy shown at the beginning of the movie wasn’t going to come true as it would have been very rude of the writer to kill off a character without the creator’s explicit permission. The plot is okay, through the animation is quite good. The writer missed an opportunity to explore the psychological and societal ramifications of Shion’s power, drawing an interesting parallel between her and Naruto in that their powers made them into outcasts. Honolulu Naruto fans should watch this when they want to kick back and relax.
