tobyMac's Hits Deep Tour 2013 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis

Toby McKeehan, born Kevin Michael McKeehan, and known by many simply as tobyMac, brought his Hits Deep Tour 2013 to Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Sunday, December 15th, to the delight and joy of fans of all ages...touching hearts, minds, and souls. As Christmas was not too far off, this night would truly prove to be remarkable...yes, an early Christmas gift. "It's the last show of the tour", yelled Toby, "so we've saved the best for last"! Maybe, just maybe, he and his musical cohorts did save the best for last. But, with the offering of such an overabundance of highly notable creative talent delivering inspirational music, it really was hard to imagine that any of the other tourstops could have been anything less satisfying and less entertaining.

Six-time GRAMMY Award, multi-DOVE award winner and two-time DOVE "Artist Of The Year" Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) artist tobyMac enlisted several of his most talented musical friends, including multi-GRAMMY Award nominated and multi-DOVE Award winner Brandon Heath, Multi-GRAMMY Award nominated and DOVE Award winner Mandisa, GRAMMY Award nominated and DOVE Award winner Jamie Grace, multi-DOVE Award winner Chris August, DOVE Award winner Colton Dixon, and DOVE Award nominated Capital Kings (whose self-titled debut album was just named one of iTunes Best in 2013), who together delivered nearly three hours of uplifting and popular Contemporary Christian hit music which brought about much cheering, grace, fun, constant sing-alongs, more cheering, excitement, fellowship, and even more cheering.

"I got a couple goals I set for tonight,'s three goals", Toby said humbly and in a modest tone. "Number one: I want you to leave here sweaty because you've been dancing all night long. Number two: I want you all to leave here hoarse because you've been singing and screaming all night long. And, number three: I want us all to leave here refreshed in our spirit as we've been worshiping the one true King all night long." Not to be denied, Toby and his musical friends made certain by the end of the show, his goals were indeed accomplished.

Backed by Toby's band DiversCity, Dave Wyatt (keyboards), Brian Haley (drums), Toddiefunk (bass), Byron Chambers (talkbox, percussion), Tim Rosenau (guitar, trumpet), DJ Maj (turntables), GabeReal (vocals), and Nirva Dorsaint Ready (vocals), all were consummate professionals who delivered a power-packed, spirited, and dynamic music driven performance that showcased an intense, yet visible effortlessness which allowed for a rare and irreplaceable give and take; not only between each artist and the band, but between each artist and their fans as well. Unlike other concerts where a vocalist might sing to backing tracks or a band would perform, then wait for a set changeover to occur, tobyMac's Hits Deep Tour 2013 offered, with its DiverseCity backing band, a genuine seamless transition between acts, the sense of forward movement that would never be stopped, and the distinct feeling that a one-of-a-kind, edge-of-your-seat performance could happen at any moment.

"Every few years I get to make a new CD," Toby said. "And, one of the things I love is inviting other artists to be guests on my CD. I love collaboration. As you can see by the way this whole concert is put together, collaboration is important to me. I love seeing all different people come together. I love 'musical gumbo', where we put the black folk in there, and the white folk in there, and the brown folk, and the Baptists, and the Pentecostals, and the Lutherans, and the Presbyterians, the Methodists, we mix it all together and my hope is that it smells sweet to our Father up in heaven." Collaborations indeed provided many of the highlights of the show including, Jamie Grace and tobyMac on Hold Me, Brandon Heath and Mandisa on He Paid It All, Mandisa and tobyMac on Good Morning, tobyMac with Brandon Heath on Steal My Show, tobyMac with Chris August acoustically on In The Light, tobyMac with Mandisa on Lose My Soul, tobyMac with Jonathan White on Get Back Up, tobyMac with Jamie Grace on Funky Jesus Music and everyone together on White Christmas to close out the evening.

There were other collaborations and even more highlights with each act performing solo including, Capital Kings spirited You'll Never Be Alone and I Feel So Alive, Chris August singing Starry Night. A bit of humor was visited upon the proceedings when August, saying he was hungry, picked up popcorn strewn about the stage and remarked, hopefully that was the only floor the popcorn had touched. Colton Dixon on piano on Never Gone, Jamie Grace on guitar and vocals on Beautiful Day, and Brandon Heath on Give Me Your Eyes. It really was hard to imagine that anything could provide a more memorable moment. But, Mandisa simply captivated and endeared herself to all in the arena with her engaging performance of anthems, Stronger and Overcomer...the latter had many a female holding aloft proudly a placard emblazoned with I'M AN #OVERCOMER!

The performance level of Capital Kings, Chris August, Colton Dixon, Jamie Grace, Brandon Heath, and Mandisa was already elevated because of their respective stature and accomplishments, but it wasn't until after a short intermission that much renowned and much celebrated tobyMac took to the stage and demonstrated compellingly why he has been and continues to be a musical trailblazer. Instantly capturing and holding the attention of fans, performing with an eloquent ease and an impressive emotive air about him, he launched into Lose Myself, Tonight, and then Unstoppable...and you knew tobyMac was unstoppable. Even through his acoustic set near the soundboard at the back of the venue, to returning to the main stage for the remainder of his set, tobyMac commanded ultimate attention. And, it was gladly given.

It was indeed a most triumphant evening. As Toby pointed out, "...Indianapolis was always very, very good to us coming up". "Thank you for making the last show of this tour absolutely amazing! Thank you so much Indianapolis!"
